Maine Is Pretty

Last weekend I was up in Ogunquit, Maine, visiting my parents. They’re staying in a house owned by a family friend that’s about a quarter-mile from the beach. As a child, I spent three years living in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, which is just south of Portland, so it’s always good to be back up there. It’s hard to find a more beautiful place in the eastern United States in the summer months. Go ahead, I dare you.

Ogunquit is a bustling resort town that’s known for its gay community, but this weekend it seemed fairly overrun by the family set. It’s got a wide, sandy beach (which are hard to come by on the state’s characteristically rocky coast) that doesn’t get too crowded and a bunch of restaurants and shops.

The highlight of the weekend, though, was just chilling with my parents, who moved to Stuart, Fla., from Boston last fall. They’re both fantastic cooks, and we spent much of our time relaxing, talking, reading, napping and eating — mostly outside on the patio. Lobster, steamers, peach cobbler, homemade focaccia, grilled steak, sausages and asparagus, watermelon, corn on the cob, etc., filled our bellies. Not bad for a weekend’s work. I’ll be driving up to see them for another couple of days next week, along with a weekend farther upstate visiting my best college buddy and former roommate, Kurt, and his new fiance, Kristin.
