Hope Your Weekend’s Going Well

Best part of the Fourth of July? Hot dogs. I love ‘em. Last month, my buddies and I ate nine of them during a baseball game, one for each inning.

Here’s a list of regional hot dog varieties from around the country compiled by Serious Eats, one of my favorite food blogs. I’m a big fan of the slaw dog from North Carolina (yeah, I’m biased), and the best around can be found at Skippy’s in Winston-Salem. Their pretzels are amazing, too.

Serious Eats’ list points Connecticut dog lovers to Fairfield for the best wieners, but my money in these parts is on Rosco’s Big Dog in Hartford. If they had later hours at night, I’d probably be eating there once a week. The owner lives here in West Hartford. I met him on Halloween in 2006. Nice guy.

I can’t hope to match Rosco’s hot dog skills, but I’m going to try my darndest today at the cookout we’re hosting at the house. And with that, it’s off to the supermarket. Hope everyone’s having a fun holiday!

Oh, and if you missed Joey Chestnut capture the Mustard Belt yesterday for the second straight year in the Nathan’s International July Fourth Hot Dog Eating Contest, you should be ashamed. Both he and Japanese competitive eating legend Kobayashi tied at 59 dogs in 10 minutes, which led to a five-dog overtime tiebreaker, which Chestnut won.

If that’s not American pride, I don’t know what is. USA! USA! USA!
