You Can’t Have It Both Ways

I think this is pretty lame and a waste of a perfectly good Moleskine.

But I guarantee there are publishing executives sitting in their offices right now considering this kind of “innovation” to make newspapers relevant again. Forget McLuhan. Until we develop a business model that focuses on producing quality content regardless of how it’s delivered, print media isn’t going to work its way out of this tailspin.

The infrastructure exists only to produce giant bundles of newsprint. Without some sort of long view on this mess, there’s nowhere to go but straight into the ground. The opportunity to think about this stuff could be a silver lining to the Tribune restructuring this summer, but long-term strategy doesn’t seem to be on many minds. Sigh.
