Trouble In Dakar…
Last summer I got on a real geography kick and learned a lot about Africa and its capital cities. In my mind I had etched out a shortlist of those I’d like to visit, and somewhere in the middle is Dakar, Senegal. (No. 1 on the list is undoubtedly Maputo, Mozambique.)
So I was sad to see this troubling report about the growing economic woes in Dakar featured in the mezzanine on nytimes.com. Despite a lot of growth in the capital, most of the lower class and an increasing amount of the middle class there live in “filthy, flood-prone slums.”
